Good day, Ladies and Gentlemen.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to the people of Mezőhegyes and the surrounding area. I welcome those who have been able to fit in here, and those who have not. Good day to you all, and thank you for coming.
Here with Minister János Lázár we are a special opening act, because what we have come together for is actually the opening of a sports hall, to which the old stars and the local old boys will be coming. That will actually be the day’s most important moment. I am also speaking before János Lázár, because he is the one who will officially open the hall. After all, he is the one who has not only put a lot of thought and work into this, but he is also responsible for everything that we see here, because he is the president of the foundation that runs the Mezőhegyes farm. I thank János and the Mayor for their work in recent years.
In launching this great event, I would just like to briefly point out what a fine hall this is: if you look around you can see what a special hall it is. We are convinced that if we build something it should be the best, and that is what we work towards. And if something is Hungarian, that means that it is the best. I hardly think that we could find a finer, more tasteful, more functional sports hall of this size anywhere in Central Europe today. This is a Hungarian architectural creation, and here we have achieved what we want: if it is Hungarian, it means it is the best.
I would like to tell the parents that we know we cannot do without sport. All of us who are raising children or grandchildren know exactly how difficult it is to raise them to be decent human beings in this crazy world, where they are tempted by all kinds of things to deviate from the path we would like to see them follow. And I am convinced – and I say this from personal experience – that it will not work without sport. So in this modern world, if children do not play sport, if they are not in the community, if they do not train, if they do not learn to do their duty, if they do not learn to live in the community, to work for the community, if they do not learn the value of work and humility, then nowhere else in the world will they be taught these things better than in the locker room and on the sports field. That is why here we are not simply handing over a sports hall, but we are giving the parents of Mezőhegyes the greatest possible help in bringing up their children in the way they have imagined.
And thirdly, sincerity demands that I say something about the fact that we are also campaigning: we are in the middle of a European and local election campaign. The most important issue in this election campaign is war or peace, and my experience is that there is nothing like sport to create peace between people who disagree. Sport: peace.
