Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to initiate opinion vote on Ukraine’s EU membership

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will initiate an opinion vote on Ukraine’s EU membership. The Prime Minister spoke about this to journalists on Thursday night in Brussels after the extraordinary EU summit concerned with Ukraine.

Mr Orbán stressed that we must seriously table the issue of Ukraine’s membership of the European Union because at this point in time, it was impossible to responsibly decide in favour of it.

He also said he would not like a decision to be made over the people’s heads, and so they will initiate an opinion vote on Ukraine’s EU membership.

He observed that this would be implemented the same as they implemented national consultations: swiftly and simply. “Then we’ll see,” he added.

The Prime Minister further argued that the European Union’s entire system of economic management would undergo a transformation with Ukraine’s EU membership. “We are not prepared for this, and so I believe that it must be slowed down, and we must find out the people’s opinion about this issue under any circumstances,” he said.

The Prime Minister took the view that the money they wanted to send to Ukraine and the burden arising from Ukraine’s EU membership combined amounted to a sum that the European Union’s economy – with Hungary’s economy in it – would not be able to finance.

By his account, there was agreement among leaders at the same time that the European Union should also spend an enormous amount of money on itself in order “to reinforce our own armies.”

He said leaders of the Member States reviewed the military situation in Ukraine, regarding which he said that 26 of the 27 Member States argued that Ukraine must continue the war.

Hungary remained on the side of peace, he underlined.

“We said rather than continuing the war, we must support the President of the United States of America with all our strength and energy in the interest of the successful outcome of his peace talks. Meaning that we should be marching forward together with the Americans and should aim for peace, rather than for the continuation of the war,” he stated.

He indicated that the 26 Member States had adopted a document about the continuation of the war as well as about strengthening Ukraine so that it could continue to fight even further. Naturally, Hungary did not support this because “this was utterly contrary to our pro-peace position,” Mr Orbán added.
