Hungarian government is doing everything it can to protect rights of Hungarian community in Ukraine

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán replied in a letter to President of the Hungarian Democratic Alliance in Ukraine László Zubánics who earlier sent an open letter to the Hungarian Prime Minister in connection with Ukraine’s EU accession, Bertalan Havasi, the Deputy State Secretary heading the Press Office of the Prime Minister informed the Hungarian news agency MTI on Tuesday.

“First of all, I’d like to reassure you that the Hungarian government is doing everything it can to protect the rights of the Hungarian community in Ukraine,” Mr Orbán pointed out in his letter.

He wrote that in his view, the commencement of talks regarding Ukraine’s accession to the European Union is not timely at present given that the European Commission has been unable to adequately prepare the issue for the European Council’s December meeting. Therefore, the Prime Minister wrote in continuation, “we will propose that, instead of membership which is a legally complex process, the European Union seek to establish a strategic partnership with Ukraine.”

“I can reassure you that also in the future, we will be working towards ensuring that the Hungarian community in Ukraine may live in a peaceful, stable and developing country,” Mr Orbán wrote, concluding his message.
