The EU has decided to go to war

The European Union has decided to go to war, this is bad for Hungary and bad for the EU, too, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Thursday in Copenhagen, talking to journalists at the beginning of the second day of the informal EU summit. The Hungarian Prime Minister-President of Fidesz announced that he would recommend to the board of Fidesz that they launch a signature collection campaign “against Brussels’ war plans.”

Mr Orbán said Wednesday was a difficult day, and Thursday will not be any easier; effectively all proposals that are on the table are war proposals. “We should give more money to the Ukrainians for war, we should give weapons to the Ukrainians for war, we should accelerate their accession to the European Union,” he listed, stressing that “everything is about war.”

The Prime Minister said that the EU has decided to go to war, and additionally, on Wednesday, they even presented their war strategy about how to defeat the Russians. “This is terrifying, this is bad for Hungary, and I think it’s also bad for the European Union,” Mr Orbán pointed out.

He announced that he would recommend to the board of Fidesz that they launch a signature collection campaign in Hungary “against Brussels’ war plans” because they will need all the support they can get in order to stay out of the war.

In answer to a question, he said he did not consent to the proposal tabled at the informal EU summit about changing the legal procedure for EU accession talks that has been followed so far. He recalled that so far the opening of each chapter of negotiations had been subject to the 100 per cent consensus of Member States, Now, they want to change this in such a way that the opening of chapters should not be subject to unanimity, a qualified majority should be enough, and only the closing of chapters should require unanimity.

At the same time, he drew attention to the fact that changing the rule itself required unanimity. “And I said I won’t consent to this,” he stated.

He also spoke about the fact that he was going to meet with the Prime Minister of Georgia. He said Georgia is one of the most successful European countries; he does not know any other country that is equally successful. The country is stable politically, its economy “is roaring,” he pointed out, adding that this is why they admire and study their many successes.

Europe needs successful countries because a number of European countries are unsuccessful, over here, the economy is not working, it is stagnating, he pointed out. Mr Orbán said we need countries like Georgia to join the EU.
