Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had talks with Prime Minister of Italy

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met on Thursday in the Carmelite Monastery in order to discuss the most important European and international questions as well as issues concerning the excellent bilateral relations that exist between Rome and Budapest, Bertalan Havasi, the Prime Minister’s press chief informed the Hungarian news agency MTI.

Commenting on the results of the Budapest Demographic Forum, they reiterated the importance of a family-friendly policy also in light of the demographic challenges facing Europe.

In the context of the war in Ukraine, the two prime ministers condemned the Russian aggression and called for peace. They spoke about the assistance provided for Ukraine to date, and stressed the importance of preserving European unity in supporting Ukraine.

In connection with the issues of migration, they reiterated that fast and firm action must be taken. Migration is a common challenge for the European Union to which Europe must give a collective response, the prime ministers established, adding that in the interest of preventing migrants from setting out, they must focus on the external dimension, especially through political and economic support provided for the countries of origin and transit of migrants, the fight against people smuggling networks and an effective policy of readmission concerning persons who are not entitled to remain in Europe. In order to guarantee the cooperation of the countries of origin, conditionality mechanisms must also be introduced, they stressed.

The two prime ministers stated their commitment to the continued close cooperation of their governments, also with regard to Hungary’s EU presidency due in the second half of 2024, the communique issued after the meeting reads.
