What’s happening now is unacceptable, we won’t allow people to be robbed

What is happening now is unacceptable; we will not allow people to be robbed, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a video posted on his Facebook account on Tuesday in connection with the latest price rises.

Mr Orbán said “in 2024, we successfully knocked inflation down; yet, in January, we were compelled to see that prices started going up again in the case of some food industry products.”

“What we saw was that supermarket chains and traders implemented price increases at an unacceptable rate.” The price of flour increased by about 40 per cent, the price of eggs by more than 30 per cent, the prices of dairy products by 39 per cent and even the price of vegetable oil went up by 10 to 11 per cent, the Prime Minister said, observing that “this is unacceptable, this will destroy people.”

Mr Orbán said they want to come to an agreement with the representatives of supermarket chains in order to prevent the recurrence of such price rises as they mean unaffordable prices for families and pensioners.

He highlighted that he was hopeful regarding the conclusion of an agreement. He added that if not, then Minister for the National Economy Márton Nagy would be given authorisation to introduce officially fixed prices in respect of certain products, and if that was not enough, they were also ready to limit trade profits.

“What is happening now is quite simply unacceptable, price rises must be curbed under any circumstances, we will not allow people to be robbed,” the Prime Minister stressed.
