At the election rally of the government parties, Mr Orbán highlighted: we are still the only country in the whole of Europe which openly says no to the war. Hence the fact that the Ukrainians have appeared in the Hungarian elections.
“They have appeared with their money, they have appeared with the oil blockade, they have appeared with their spies and agents, and have infiltrated Hungarian public life, including politics,” the Prime Minister said.
He stressed: we will not accept any interference in the Hungarian elections even if we know that our opponent wants to form a pro-Ukraine government in Hungary, and this coincides with the Ukrainians’ interests.
Mr Orbán laid down: we will not give them our youths, we will not give them weapons and neither will we give our money to Ukraine. “Zelenskyy’s plans won’t work on 12 April,” the Prime Minister said, taking the view that ‘staying out’ will be the key phrase of the next four years.
“Will we succeed in staying out of the war, will we succeed in staying out of weapon shipments and will we succeed in staying out of financing Ukraine?” he asked the questions. He said “it is not enough to want to stay out of the war, you must be able to say no.” The question is not who wants war because “no Hungarian in their right mind would want war,” but who is able to say no, he said.
He stressed: Fidesz-Christian Democratic People’s Party are able to say no, “we do say no from time to time, we said no in the past, and also now we are ready to do so.”
He said when he began touring the country, he was told that they were “more or less on a par with” their opponents, but in the past two weeks he has seen that “we are more, they are less.” He added: proof of this is that “they sent their agents provocateurs also here, and at that, young people.” They believed that they had already won the elections, they believed that they already had it, but the cheese was slipping out of their mouths, he stressed, asking his supporters to receive these agents provocateurs calmly and with composure.
Mr Orbán also spoke about the fact that the Hungarian elections were surrounded by great international interest because “there are a few things which only we Hungarians have had the courage to do in the past 16 years and they look upon us as a model.” We are the only country in Europe which said we will not allow anyone from Brussels to tell us whom we will live together with; no external force whatsoever can force strangers on us, and those who want a migrant-free Europe are rooting for the migrant-free Hungary, he argued, indicating that this, too, is at stake in the Hungarian elections.
He stressed: Hungary provides hope, an example and encouragement for Europe’s peace-loving peoples, ours is the only openly anti-war country which “the Slovaks will be joining soon.” Therefore, all Europeans with anti-war sentiments are rooting for us, he stated.
He highlighted: our opponent wants to form a pro-Ukraine government in Hungary, adding that the Ukrainians are a nation at war who “are capable of anything,” including that they previously blocked Hungary’s supply with a gas blockade. He said had the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade not suggested the building of a gas pipeline bypassing Ukraine, “we would be in trouble” as if we are cut off from cheap Russian energy carriers, we, too, will have to pay as much for household energy as people in Poland and the Czech Republic do where household energy costs are three to four times higher than in Hungary. In his words, “this effectively takes an entire monthly salary away from Hungarian families.”
Mr Orbán highlighted: the Ukrainian president’s goal is to cause chaos in Hungary by paralysing the country. He pointed out: while the price of fuel is going up everywhere, in Hungary there is a protected, capped price.
“Zelenskyy’s plan has failed. It has failed now, and it will fail on 12 April as well,” he stressed.
He pointed out that they had honoured their most important 2022 pledge as they had kept Hungary out of the war. Today, Hungary is the safest state in the whole of Europe, the Prime Minister stated.
He recalled: even in the shadow of the war, the government has restored the thirteenth monthly pension and started introducing the fourteenth monthly, has not given up on supporting families, has doubled the tax benefit available in relation to children, and has managed to introduce – as the only government in the world – tax exemption for mothers with minimum two children.
Mr Orbán further recalled: they pledged to build a workfare economy which also means that the state will not give taxpayers’ money to people who could work, but choose not to. He highlighted: despite the war, they have protected full employment, and if they are given the chance to form a government again, by the end of the next term, as many as five million people will have jobs and the average monthly income will be a million forints.
He said there is a credit contract on the table in Brussels about a loan Brussels is to provide for Ukraine, but the European Union has no money. Therefore, they are taking out a loan which is guaranteed by the Member States. The Ukrainians will repay this loan once they have defeated the Russians and the Russians have paid them reparations, meaning that that money will never be repaid, he said, adding that this means that when the loan matures, the guarantor Member States will have to step in and they will have to repay it.
He highlighted: if there is a pro-Ukraine government, then Hungary, too, will enter this loan, and upon the maturity of the loan, Hungary, too, will have to repay it. But “it won’t be just you repaying it, it will be your children and grandchildren as well,” he told his audience.
He observed: what is truly at stake in the elections is “whether we will continue to have a patriotic government or a pro-Ukraine government will be formed in Hungary.”
Mr Orbán further spoke about the fact that they had finally managed to bring a major investment to Békéscsaba which would create 2,500 new jobs for the locals.
