Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to Spanish PM: Commencement of negotiations regarding Ukraine’s EU accession is unprepared and untimely 

On Thursday afternoon, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán conducted a telephone conversation with Pedro Sanchez, Prime Minister of Spain, the country which currently holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union, also as leader of the country to take over the EU presidency in the second half of next year, Bertalan Havasi, the Prime Minister’s press chief informed the Hungarian news agency MTI. 

During the conversation, Mr Orbán attempted to convince his Spanish counterpart of the need for preserving European unity, Mr Havasi reported. 

With regard to the fact that there is a significant difference of opinion among Member States regarding Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, Hungary will propose that they remove the issue from the agenda of the upcoming meeting of the European Council. Hungary regards the commencement of negotiations regarding Ukraine’s EU accession as unprepared and untimely, Mr Orbán told the Spanish Prime Minister according to his press chief’s communication.
