The Prime Minister wrote just four days before the historic summit of Presidents Trump and Putin, the European Council had intended to issue a declaration on behalf of all EU heads of state and government. “Before the European liberal mainstream starts the ‘Putin’s puppet’ tune again, I’d like to share with you why I was unable to support the declaration on behalf of Hungary,” Mr Orbán wrote.
The Prime Minister summed up in three points why he had refused to join the common declaration.
By his account, the declaration seeks to set conditions for a meeting to which the EU’s leaders have not even been invited.
According to Mr Orbán, it is sad enough in itself that the EU has been sidelined. “It would be worse still if we imparted instructions from the bench,” he observed.
“The only reasonable step on the part of the leaders of the EU is if, following the example of the US-Russia summit, we ourselves take the initiative to convene an EU-Russia summit,” he added.
Let’s give peace a chance, Mr Orbán wrote, concluding his post.
