I can’t support the adoption of a document that is contrary to the decision of the Hungarian people

On Tuesday, speaking to the political weekly and news portal Mandiner, Prime Minister stressed the need for a Russia-European Union summit.

Answering a question in the video, the Prime Minister confirmed that Hungary did not support the European Council’s joint declaration in connection with the meeting of US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin due to be held on Friday.

Mr Orbán mentioned two reasons: on the one hand, the declaration includes a clear call, urging Ukraine’s European Union membership. However, in Hungary “there was a referendum, the Vote2025” where the Hungarian people said they do not want to be in the same European Union as the Ukrainians.

“If they want us to adopt a document which is contrary to the decision of the Hungarian people, I can’t possibly support it,” he laid down.

He said the other reason is that the Russo-Ukrainian war is a European affair which should be taken care of by Europe, but it is unable to do so. However, when “two strong men” – the US and the Russian presidents – sit down to have talks, it is pathetic and weak to shout in from the sidelines.

He suggested that the European Union should instead adopt “a more masculine line,” should awaken and find its self-esteem, and should take the initiative as this is a conflict taking place “in our backyard.”

“We need a Russia-European Union summit, rather than commenting on a Russian-American summit,” Mr Orbán stressed.

In answer to the question of how alone Hungary is with its position on this issue, he said we are never alone, we are the only ones who say this, but many think the same way, he added.

In answer to a question, the Prime Minister said he expects the Friday Russian-US summit to significantly reduce the risk of a world war.
