Hungary has a fundamental, existential interest in Budapest summit succeeding

Hungary has a fundamental, existential interest in the Budapest Peace Summit succeeding, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wrote on his Facebook account on Monday.

Mr Orbán wrote: “‘It’s all well and good that Trump and Putin are meeting in Budapest, but how will this make bread cheaper?’ Ever since the announcement of the Budapest Peace Summit, left-wing analysts and politicians have been left with this one single question with which to split hairs. Let’s see then, how,” he wrote.

He pointed out that in the first three years of the Russo-Ukrainian war, Hungary had lost HUF 9,100 billion, an amount of more than HUF 2 million per family. The price of energy and the price of gas has gone up, inflation has skyrocketed, we have sustained severe losses on the sanctions, we have been able to trade less, and interest rates on government securities have increased, meaning that the cost of the country’s financing has gone up, he added.

“If we finally succeed in putting an end to the war, all this will stop. The Hungarian economy will be able to breathe a sigh of relief, and we may finally return to pre-war growth. Everyone will earn more, and so even bread will be cheaper. Therefore, Hungary has a fundamental, existential interest in the Budapest Peace Summit succeeding. Let’s do everything we can for it,” the Prime Minister wrote.
