Hungary continues to support the initiative that Europe should be able to protect its own sovereignty also independently

Parliament laid down the Hungarian position, Hungary continues to support the initiative that Europe should be able to protect its own sovereignty also independently, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated on Wednesday in Brussels, arriving at the meeting of the Patriots for Europe party group ahead of the EU summit in the House of Hungary operating in the Belgian capital.

The Prime Minister stressed that Hungary also supported armament in the interest of European security.

“The question is where the money will come from. Our proposal is that everyone should contribute the necessary funds from their own budgets. Rather than raising the necessary funds from collective EU borrowing. We don’t want to be mixed up in joint borrowing with anyone,” he underlined.

The Prime Minister added: “If someone wants to help, they should put the money into a common European security fund.” He said Hungary is ready to do this, the Hungarian budget is capable of this.

Mr Orbán further highlighted that Ukraine’s EU membership would be one of the topics of the Thursday summit. There will be attempts to hasten this, but Hungary categorically rejects this.

“The war in the past three years has cost [Hungary] – broken down into families and households – two and a half million forints. The direct cost alone of Ukraine’s accession that would immediately emerge already in the first year would amount to 500,000 forints per family. We don’t want to undertake this burden, and so we will persevere with our own position,” he pointed out.

In the context of migration, he said ahead of the beginning of the summit, the leaders of rebel Member States who disagree with the current policy would also like to change this.

“Tomorrow morning, there will be an open conspiracy led by the Italians which seeks to induce the EU to stop the influx of illegal migrants,” he added.

In answer to questions from members of the international press, Mr Orbán said Hungary does not support the disbursement of EU funds to Ukraine because Hungary believes that the European Union has a single simple mission: it must support US President Donald Trump’s efforts to restore peace. “This is what we must do, nothing more. If there is anyone on Earth who is able to restore peace at this point in time, it is the president of the United States,” he underlined.

He stressed that he represented his own nation’s opinion, and the Hungarians have always strongly believed that we must focus on creating peace with all our strength and capacity.

“First of all, for Christian reasons because every day we’re losing thousands of human lives which is utterly contrary to our values; secondly, also for economic reasons because the war is extremely expensive: due to the war, the price of energy has gone up, the interest rates of bonds have increased, and we have lost many export opportunities in Russia. If we now finally have a leader, President Trump, who takes responsibility for initiating peace talks, we should support him,” he added.

In answer to a question about whether Hungary will ban the Budapest Pride march, he said “At this point in time, we’re not there yet. What we now did was that we changed the Constitution, and laid down that it is a fundamental right of children to have access to appropriate raising and education. This is the most important value which by far precedes all other fundamental rights of the citizens of Hungary. So, this is what we did, based on which it is possible to ban anything that is contrary to the best interests of children. What we are doing serves the protection of our children,” he stated. He added that the organisers of the event would have to contact the authorities – the same as in all other normal instances – and the authorities would respond to the application. He stressed that they would not arrest anyone attending such an event, but would impose fines on them. “If you’re a lawbreaker, if you break the law, you must pay,” he said.
