Facebook statement by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán

The NATO summit is about to begin here in Washington. NATO was founded 75 years ago to protect the security of its members. But today it seems to be moving away from its original purpose, and increasingly behaving like a belligerent organization. One sign of this is NATO’s increasingly active role in the Russia–Ukraine war. We believe that this is dangerous, and even irresponsible, because no one can see how this will end and where this will lead us. Today I will argue that NATO should return to its original spirit: NATO should win peace, not the wars around it. To do so, we should first and foremost develop our own defence capabilities. Therefore, on behalf of Hungary, today I will confirm that we will not participate in NATO’s Ukraine mission, but we will fully comply with our obligations to develop Hungarian defence capabilities.
