European Union should not be copying foreign policy of US Democrats

The essence of our concept – which departs from the official concept – is that rather than copying the foreign policy of US Democrats, the European Union should adopt a European approach of its own – and this is what we keep advocating for – in the spirit of strategic autonomy, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated, arriving at the fourth meeting of the European Political Community (EPC) on Thursday at Blenheim Palace near Oxford, United Kingdom.

In answer to a question regarding the status of the Hungarian peace mission, Mr Orbán said “we’re making good progress, it’s never easy when there is a headwind, but for the time being, we have taken every step as planned.”

He added that he had made a few recommendations in the interest of the adoption of a European approach. “I’m making slow progress, but they’re beginning to digest it. I sincerely hope that with the next steps I’ll be able to move further forward,” he said, evaluating the situation.

Regarding his talks conducted in the past few days with a view to peace in Ukraine, he said at those talks he represented his own position, while regarding former US President Donald Trump, he said “he is a man of peace, and peace is what we need.”

In connection with the political situation in Georgia, he stressed that Georgia was a wonderful country which was making very good progress, and the government in office there was trying to maintain the country’s independence and sovereignty amidst very difficult circumstances.

Regrettably, many European leaders do not understand how difficult it is for a country like Georgia to preserve its sovereignty in every direction, he observed, adding that he himself, however, very much appreciates the efforts they are making.

In answer to a question concerning his message for Ukraine, the Hungarian Prime Minister said “I stand with you.”

He took the view that there is a long way to go before peace can be restored because there are many pro-war countries which believe that they can defeat the Russians with military force.

Mr Orbán highlighted, however, that he did not share that view because he knew the Russian people, the Ukrainian people and the entire context, and so in his view, there was no solution to this conflict on the battlefield.

Every day, we are losing thousands of innocent people, despite the fact that there is nothing more precious than human life, and so we must stop this, he stressed, adding that the solution can be found at the negotiating table, not on the battlefield.

Heads of state and government from 47 European countries have been invited to the meeting. According to the preliminary agenda, the attending leaders will discuss continued support to Ukraine as well as shared challenges such as of energy and connectivity, security and democracy, and migration.

The European Political Community (EPC) is an intergovernmental forum for political and strategic discussions about the future of Europe which was established in 2022 at the initiative of French head of state Emmanuel Macron.
