The Prime Minister sent farmers the message to persevere, they have been deceived.
He stressed that farmers were angry not only because a decision had been made against them, but they “were also taken for fools” and efforts were being made to trick them.
He recalled that according to the relevant rules, international trade agreements must also be ratified by national parliaments.
“It’s evident that as long as there is a patriotic government in Hungary, we will never approve the Mercosur agreement,” he stated.
He added that President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the Commission had tricked national parliaments by having created an auxiliary rule whereby it was possible to apply the signed agreement on a temporary basis also before that.
“This is why farmers are angry, so, it’s not just about the economic issues of Mercosur, not just about the future of agriculture, but about the fact that farmers have been tricked, they’re avoiding national parliaments and are adopting decisions that are disadvantageous and damaging for farmers,” he said, adding that this is why they are now demonstrating in Strasbourg and demanding Von der Leyen’s resignation. “And they’re right,” he observed.
