Interview with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the Hungarian daily newspaper “Blikk”

Ákos Bittó: The Digital Civic Circles were launched not so long ago, in August, if I remember correctly. At the time I had the feeling that they’d come perhaps a little late, don’t you think? After all, your political opponents, your biggest political opponents, had been present in the online space for much longer.

Yes. We started late, but we’re very fast. We’re still on schedule.

What’s the situation with membership numbers? Has it developed as you’d thought it would, or as you’d planned?

What are we talking about?

The trend.

In fact we launched the Digital Civic Circles – or rather their precursors – in 2002. What we’re really talking about now is how to get a community into a state of political action – how to get a country to think about issues that are important to it. The fact that it’s online is only a technological issue; the essence is the same. You’re human, I’m human, so how can we convince each other to come together and discuss a few things? And if we agree, perhaps we’ll do things together. This online method is what the Digital Civic Circles are all about. In this sense, we started much earlier than anyone else, as we launched the civic circles in 2002. We’re fast and we’re doing well. Hungary is full of talented young people, and such digital matters should be entrusted to young people – because for me it’s all hocus-pocus. And we’re full of talent. Technologically, they built it up very quickly, found the methods, and we’re very strong. We’re already over a hundred thousand.

Also arriving in Győr in a few hours is Péter Magyar…

Great!

…who’s invited you to take part in a debate.

Yes.

You still won’t go head-to-head with him. Why not?

I’m constantly in debate with his masters. The Tisza Party is a project that was conceived in Brussels; that’s where it’s financed from, that’s where the handlers are, and that’s where the puppet master controlling it is. If someone in Hungary wants to have a serious debate about Hungary’s future, then they need to have that debate with his masters in Brussels, not with him. That’s the way it is. I’m not happy about it, but that’s what European politics has become.

And one more quick question, if I may.

Yes?

Talking about the Russian oil embargo, the US Secretary of State has said that the exemption from the sanctions that we’ve been given will last for one year. What’s the situation there? Has something gone wrong? Why are they saying one thing, while you’re saying another? What’s the real situation here?

Everyone says what they want, but only one thing matters – and that’s what the US president says. Thank you.

Thank you.
