Ukraine’s admission to NATO would amount to immediate war with Russia, and with this we would risk outbreak of World War III

Ukraine’s admission to NATO would amount to an immediate war with Russia, and with this we would risk the outbreak of World War III. Therefore, Ukraine must not be admitted either to NATO, or to the European Union. It is an elementary security interest of Hungary not to belong to the same integration framework as Ukraine, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wrote on his Facebook account on Tuesday.

In his post, the Prime Minister recalled that the other day an initiative had been launched by Hungarian citizens open to political thinking, the signatories of which included persons with whom he had fought together for the freedom of the Hungarians and the independence of our country 35 years previously.

“For obvious reasons, the respect stemming from this has diminished, but the common past still commands us. Therefore, I have the following answer for them,” Mr Orbán wrote.

According to the Prime Minister, the signatories to the declaration have total disregard for Hungary’s interests. They wrongly assess the evident consequences of the continuation of the Russo-Ukrainian war, and unwittingly serve the interests of Russia which claims a new victory every single day with the continuation of the war.

“They also erroneously identify the interests of the European Union. If Ukraine is admitted to the EU, that would mean an open war at this point in time, while after a ceasefire, a permanent risk of a European-Russian war,” the Prime Minister wrote.

Mr Orbán drew attention to the fact that they also conveniently forget that the countries of the former Soviet bloc were always first admitted to NATO. As a result, countries with safe borders from a military point of view were admitted to the European subsequently. This was a reasonable, safe and correct method.

“Ukraine’s admission to NATO would amount to an immediate war with Russia, and with this we would risk the outbreak of World War III. Therefore, Ukraine must not be admitted either to NATO, or to the European Union. It is an elementary security interest of Hungary not to belong to the same integration framework as Ukraine,” Mr Orbán wrote.

He added: if we want to help Ukraine, which is evidently a fair intention, then rather than supporting the war resulting in the destruction of Ukraine and the disintegration of the Ukrainian nation, or fanciful dreams of integration, we should offer the Ukrainians a form of cooperation which stops the war, provides them with meaningful assistance and does not sacrifice Hungary and the European Union’s interests on the altar of a flawed and delirious political strategy.

Ceterum censeo, for us Hungary comes first, Mr Orbán wrote, concluding his post.
