Ankara calling. Hungary’s EU presidency is drawing to a close, so at the end of the year we’ve launched a final blitz. I’ve visited Pope Francis in Rome and met the Italian prime minister. I’ve visited President Donald Trump in Florida. Yesterday, I had a long telephone conversation with the Russian president. And here in Ankara today I’ve had talks with the President of Türkiye. This is an opportunity for us to end the war and plan for peace. The most important thing is for everyone in Europe to come to their senses. The leaders in Brussels must also recognise that there’s no future in a war strategy. Instead of continuing the war, we must work to strengthen Europe’s defence capabilities and build a new security system with our neighbours. Six months ago no one wanted to hear about peace, but now everyone’s talking about it. We’ve opened the door, and now there can be negotiations on the substance. This is the Hungarian EU Presidency’s greatest achievement.
