Hungary is a committed supporter of Serbia’s EU accession

On Monday in the Carmelite Monastery, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán received President of the National Assembly of Serbia Vladimir Orlic, Bertalan Havasi, the Prime Minister’s press chief informed the Hungarian news agency MTI.

Amidst the present war threats and also due to the consequences of the crisis brought on by the sanctions, Serbia’s EU membership is a strategic issue which cannot allow any further postponement, the parties laid down at the meeting.

Mr Orbán reassured the Serbian house president that at every EU forum Hungary would remain a committed advocate of the Western Balkans’ EU integration, while in the context of the Russo-Ukrainian war, they both urged an immediate ceasefire and peace talks.

The parties also spoke about the fact that close cooperation in border protection between Hungary and Serbia as neighbouring countries was crucial in order to stop illegal migration.

They agreed on the continuation of cooperation with a view to further strengthening energy security and welcomed the recent agreement on the establishment of a Hungarian-Serbian gas trading joint venture, Mr Havasi reported.
