Zsolt Semjén is innocent

Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén is an innocent man, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán laid down in an exclusive interview given to Hetek.

On the programme broadcast on Saturday, the Prime Minister raised the question of why Zsolt Semjén of all people was singled out.

“We all know that Zsolt Semjén is – I’m not saying that he’s a saint, but almost. He’s fundamentally far not only from hideous crimes, but even from the sins of fallibility. He’s an innocent man. And in this, he most definitely is. But why was he of all people picked? Why did they want to discredit him with paedophile accusations? They did because he is the leader of a party which is the only ideological party in Hungarian politics today,” the Prime Minister stated.

He stressed: “The Chistian Democratic People’s Party has an extremely robust Christian set of values, it’s an ideological party. And the president is its key person. By having tried to hunt him down, while he’s innocent, in actual fact, they wanted to hunt down the only Christian Hungarian party standing on ideological foundations. And evidently, through his person, it would also have been possible to deal the church a blow,” Mr Orbán explained.

The Prime Minister also spoke about the war in Ukraine and “the ability to stay out of it,” about Europe’s war plan, and the fact that attempts are being made to topple the Hungarian national government from Brussels and Ukraine. He further spoke about special relations with Israel, Europe’s Islamisation and the wave of anti-Semitic hatred, while he described demography as the most important issue. In his opinion, what the Hungarian government is doing in family policy is the right thing.

The Prime Minister said, according to the Hungarian Constitution, the state and churches function separately, but cooperate in certain areas.

The state only provides grants for churches for the purposes they request funds for, the Prime Minister said, stressing at the same time that in addition to the service churches perform in the fields of education, health care, child care and social care, he regards the very existence  of religious communities as a value. “The very existence of churches in itself is beneficial, it’s something that Hungary needs,” he pointed out.

The fact that Christianity and the future of the nation have been connected together for more than a thousand years cannot be ignored. A Hungarian prime minister can be expected to say that the more spiritual communities resting on religious foundations there are, the better it is for Hungary, Mr Orbán stressed.

In the Prime Minister’s words, today in Europe, what is at stake in every election is whether the Brussels bureaucrats manage to achieve that nation states are led by governments which follow Brussels’ instructions. Wherever there are no such governments, they seek to replace them, and wherever the patriots are winning, they seek to foil them.

Mr Orbán pointed out that the Tisza Party was a Brussels project. These parties are established and supported by civil-society organisations and the pro-Brussels media and their politicians are protected through immunity because they want them – after replacing the incumbent government – to implement Brussels’ wishes. The Brussels elite does not want to change laws; they want to replace governments.

Ukraine’s existence is in Hungary’s best interest. Hungary supports – instead of membership – the conclusion of a strategic agreement between the European Union and Ukraine which regulates, inter alia, trade, employment, the issue of the minorities living there and possible security guarantees, the Prime Minister explained.

The agreement would guarantee the preservation of Ukraine’s existence as an independent state; at present, it has no independent statehood. At present, Ukraine is supported by the EU; however, most of the money is being spent not on the functioning of the country, but on the war. We are burning billions of euros on the front, he said, adding that according to the calculations of the Hungarian government, Europe has burnt some EUR 175 billion so far.

Mr Orbán said it is an odd situation that the EU is not negotiating with the Russians, whilst saying that this is our war. In his words, Hungary does not agree with this, “this is not our war, but we should nonetheless negotiate.” As a result of the American turnaround, the EU will purchase American weapons to the value of hundreds of billions of euros which we will then give to Ukraine. As he observed, “the President of the United States is a businessman.”

Regarding the situation in the Middle East, the Prime Minister said one of the reasons why we support Israel is that there is a substantial Hungarian community living in Israel, and there is likewise a substantial Jewish community living in Hungary. At the same time, there is a strong tie through Jewish-Christian culture as well. The stability of the region is key as in a case to the contrary, a refugee wave will start heading for Europe. In addition to the flourishing business relations between the two countries, another important consideration is that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is a sincere friend of Hungary.

The Prime Minister pointed out that the US President’s twenty-point peace proposal appeared to be the path leading to a solution. By his account, Hungary, too, supports this.

The Prime Minister believes that the reason for the intensification of anti-Semitic and homophobic phenomena is that among the many millions of migrants that flooded Europe, these notions are traditionally much more widely supported than on the continent in general. “I thank the Lord for having given us enough strength not to let them in here because had we done so, we ourselves would also be struggling with this problem,” he pointed out.

Mr Orbán stressed that had the government not started its family support measures in 2010, today, there would be 200,000 fewer children in Hungary. We must spend as much money on supporting families as possible, and while the state must not interfere with the issue of whether people decide to have children or not, they must be encouraged, he said.
