Mr Orbán stressed: the opponent is preparing to plunder Hungary. They want to pocket Hungarian families through Ukraine: Brussels regards the war in Ukraine as its own and is giving Kiev ever more money. “We must say no to providing financial support for Ukraine,” he added. “If we do not say no to providing financial support for Ukraine, your children and grandchildren will pay the price.”
He said the other method of plundering will occur through money and big capital: with Tisza’s banker politicians and energy lobbyists, multinational corporations and banks are preparing to scrap their extra taxes, to discontinue the use of cheap Russian energy and to eliminate the reduction of household energy bills. “The world of money and big capital can hardly wait for the departure of the patriotic government, and for a pro-multinational and pro-bank government to be elected in its place. “And the Tisza Party will do just that,” he added.
“If we allow this to happen, they will pocket us, everything we have built in the past 16 years, everything we have helped families with, from the reduction of household energy bills to the tax benefits made available in relation to children, will be taken away by Tisza. Therefore, I suggest that we vote not for Tisza, but for Fidesz and the Christian Democratic People’s Party so that we can continue this work,” he stressed.
He also spoke about the fact that the Ukrainians “have turned Hungary into an area of secret service operations,” they are in and out of the press, the Tisza Party, we are full of spy incidents. “We must put an end to this, and once we have won the elections, we will put an end to it with full rigour,” he stated.
“Tisza claims that they don’t want a pro-Ukraine government, but they do. That’s the truth, everyone knows that, Zelenskyy is their number one campaign man,” he said.
He accused the Ukrainians of helping all Hungarian opposition aspirations, including those of DK [Democratic Coalition] so that a pro-Ukraine government be formed in Hungary. “Slowly but surely, Zelenskyy wants to run in every election, except his own,” he observed.
In his speech, Mr Orbán described the past four years as difficult and unfair, saying that ever since the Russo-Ukrainian war broke out in February 2022, it has blocked the growth of the Hungarian economy. We are working “hard day in, day out,” but the people have the impression that the cart is not moving ahead at the speed that it should, he said.
He recalled that even despite this, they had realised the European Capital of Culture programme in Veszprém, had restored the thirteenth monthly and had started introducing the fourteenth monthly pension, had continued the building of a pro-family policy in Hungary, and had introduced and then, despite the difficulties, had doubled the tax benefit available in relation to children.
He said if the government parties are given another four years, he agrees to achieve that families deciding to have children should not be any worse off than those who decide not to have children.
He told the attendees of the rally: “now that we also have Tisza supporters among us,” he would tell them, too, that these days security is the most precious commodity. Looking at the four years ahead, he warned: there are threats in the world again which “we are not responsible for, which are beyond our control.”
Referring to the consequences of the war in Iran, he said “this wretched war” broke out in the Middle East, prices are going up, and the threat of a global energy crisis is looming. As a result of the loss of country sustained in World War I, today, Hungary has no raw material or energy reserves of its own, and is therefore compelled to import energy from abroad, he recalled.
Under normal circumstances, we pay seven billion euros annually for the energy imported from abroad; however, when the war broke out in 2022, this sum jumped to EUR 17 billion, he explained in continuation. This means that ten billion euros left the economy in a single year which is the equivalent of around HUF 4,000 billon. This money would have been enough to build 1,500 kilometres of motorway or forty new hospitals, but it “just left the Hungarian economy,” he pointed out.
There appear to be problems looming for the next four years as well: the energy crisis due to the war in the Middle East, the Russo-Ukrainian war is continuing, and due to the war in Iran, we are facing the threat of another wave of migrants in the millions, he listed the anticipated problems.
Evaluating the governance of the past 16 years, Mr Orbán described the creation of the Christian-patriotic constitution as the greatest achievement. He said “after twenty chaotic years, from 1990 to 2010, when we worked with a transitional constitution which did not state who we are, what we want, where we’re heading and what keeps us together, we finally had a Christian-patriotic constitution.” He said he is grateful for the fact that they received the majority that enabled them to perform this feat.
The Prime Minister asked the attendees of the rally not to waste the next two weeks, but to use every day to convince as many people as possible and to bring them with them on 12 April. Mr Orbán asked members of the audience to speak to their neighbours, work colleagues and family members, to bring everyone to the elections, and then the government parties will score “a fantastic, bright and great victory.”
The President of Fidesz also asked members of the audience to support the local candidate of Fidesz-Christian Democratic People’s Party Péter Ovádi, stressing that the politician has worked as a Member of Parliament for eight years and is loyal, “a true comrade-in-arms.”
Regarding Veszprém, the Prime Minister said the civic, patriotic, Christian side has always found it difficult to win and to keep the locals’ trust in the city, they have always had to fight hard for this constituency.
