Speech by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on the 69th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight

Good afternoon.

Well, we can be seen from space.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Friends, Celebrating Hungarians from all over the Carpathian Basin,

I welcome you all. Welcome, wayfarers of freedom! There are those among us who were here twenty-three years ago. I would like to extend a special welcome to them. Today you have once again occupied and filled the streets of Budapest, the capital of our nation, with a dignified commemorative march. You have brought with you flags, faith and hope, just as on 23 October 1956. Today there are no guns being fired, only songs being sung. No blood is being shed, but flags are being flown. Hearts are beating together: Hungarian hearts. And we are remembering. Lads of Pest, girls, workers, mothers – those who did not seek glory, had no desire to be heroes, but were simply defending the wounded homeland. We see a sea of flags, a wave of national colours, and again we hear the roar of ’56. Today we are showing the world that Hungary does not forget, does not let go of its heroes’ hands, and is always ready to create new ones and muster them for battle.

Welcome to the Peace March, Hungary’s greatest political force, Central Europe’s – and perhaps even Europe’s – greatest nationalist and patriotic movement. You are great, you are powerful. You are the most important political movement in Europe, capable of defending your homeland against the liberal zeitgeist and the Brusselite oppressors. You have been able to keep Europe’s only Christian, conservative and national government in power for sixteen years – and who knows how much longer. You have been able to create Europe’s only Christian and patriotic constitution. You have been able to defend Hungary’s borders and keep our country as the only migrant-free country in Europe. And you have been the only ones able to defend your families against the entire Brussels snake pit, and expel LGBTQ activists from schools. You have been able to protect your children from ideas and teachings that are contrary to nature and the order of creation. Thank you for this!

Today millions of Europeans – from Portugal to Germany, up to Lithuania – want this kind of political power and movement themselves. They would give their right arms to have migrant-free homelands. They would give years of their lives to be able to keep unhinged gender activists away from their children and ban them from schools. And they would give everything they have just to have free, Christian and patriotic countries again. We did not have to give our right arms or years of our lives, and we do not have to offer everything we have in exchange for a normal country, because you – yes, you – woke up in time, you were alert, you were brave, you stood up, and you persevered. Thank you! Bravo, I salute you! This is why it is fitting and just that today, you, the Peace March, are the ones celebrating the heroes of the Revolution in Kossuth Square.

Because 1956 is what the past sixteen years have meant to Hungarians. The Revolution, my friends, is not just a few days in the past, but the moment when a nation dared to believe in itself again. That certainty was born before the eyes of the world – just as it has been over the past sixteen years. Nothing is impossible – there are simply governments that lack vision and are incapable of action. This is why today we are not really remembering, but continuing what they started. 1956 is not the past: it lives on in every Hungarian heartbeat, in every true word, in everything within us that is still pure, courageous and free.

My Friends,

We Hungarians have always made more history than we needed to. There was plenty left over for others too. When the Hungarian heart beats, the whole world hears it. In 1956 the world not only heard it, but trembled with it. World communism was shaken, because Budapest set an example for oppressed nations. It gave hope to those who lived under oppression. It broke the chains of fear that held souls captive. And it taught the whole world that freedom is not a gift, not a favour, but a right that must be fought for. Without the Hungarians, communism would never have fallen. Without Hungary in 1956, there would have been no Prague in 1968, no Polish Solidarity, no fall of the Berlin Wall, and the ceiling of the socialist world order would not have come crashing down in 1990.

My Friends,

Today the whole world knows that Hungarians are a people who never give up on themselves. Sixty-nine years is a long time , and the world has changed a great deal since 1956. But one thing has not changed, and cannot change: our steadfastness. Steadfastness cannot change. Because the spirit of the Revolution lives on not in the struggle, but in the self-respect of the Hungarian people. 1956 is a celebration of human dignity. It is a universal human message: all peoples have the right to live in freedom, dignity and peace. We are proud that in 1956 we fought for the entire free world. Yet we were left to fend for ourselves. When things got serious we were let down, as always. 1956 is proof that we Hungarians have always given more to the world than we have received from it.

My Friends,

Since 1956, everyone has understood that there is a nation on Earth which has freedom written in its soul. That nation is us. Those who failed to learn this from 1956 have learned it from the past sixteen years. And here with us today are heroic survivors of ’56 the most steadfast wayfarers of freedom. They are the last generation to have shed their blood for Hungarian freedom. We salute them. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Sixty-nine years ago the Hungarian people found themselves in mortal danger. They faced oppression unlike anything they had ever experienced before. We had endured and survived many blows, tens of thousands of us had been put in chains, entire regions of the country had been devastated, we had been forced to hide in impassable and uninhabitable areas, and thousands of us had fled across the “Great Water”. But what happened then was unprecedented. Most of our country had been taken from us, and what remained suffered under foreign occupation. That foreign power wanted to take over our souls, destroy our national consciousness, lie about our past, and force its distorted ideals upon us. That is why we had to take up arms. That is why we had to rebel. And that is why we must rebel again and again when foreigners want to force us to live in a way that pleases them.

My Friends,

Hungarians do not ask much from life. We are satisfied with freedom. If we have freedom, we have everything, and anything is possible. We will take care of the rest. As a people we are not demanding. We do not expect much from outsiders. Praise leaves us cold. We are not interested in morsels as rewards: not in prizes, not in certificates, not in baubles. We do not want to conquer or to build empires. We do not want to tell others how to live, and we do not lecture anyone about the right way to live. We do not shy away from the tasks assigned to us; in fact, we take on missions for the sake of a just cause – but we do not chase after worldly glory. As far as we are concerned, all others are free to try to square the circle or make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. That is their business, and none of ours. We ask for only one thing, but we insist on it: Leave us be! Do not try to foist your fever dreams upon us. Let us live in freedom!

Fellow Celebrants,

We know only one freedom: the freedom of the Hungarian people. It is ours, and we shall defend it. And we have the means to do so, however much we are threatened by the powers that be or by Brussels , with its pathetic delusions of global power. We shall not kneel, and we will always have a few masterstrokes in reserve. The Viceregal Council scuttled away from here, the Soviets left, the IMF packed up and went home, and the pro-migration Brusselites have slunk away. None of them could swallow us whole: we stuck in their throats, and they could think themselves lucky that they got away without more trouble.

My Friends, Fellow Celebrants,

Brussels has decided to go to war. The pro-war countries have already formed a war alliance. With inimitable elegance, they call it a “coalition of the willing”. They are willing to send others to their deaths. They are willing to send even more weapons and even more money to Ukraine. They have declared the Ukrainian–Russian war to be their own war – and with that, they have entered it. They are in it up to their necks. If Brussels had not obstructed the American president’s peace mission, the war would already be over. Everyone knows that if Donald Trump had been President, the war would never have broken out – and if they were not obstructing him now, there would already be peace.

Hungary has taken the side of peace. The Russo–Ukrainian war is not our war. The Hungarians of Transcarpathia have been dragged into it , like Pilate was dragged into the Creed. From here, we send you this message: we have not forgotten you, we are with you, our eyes are turned to you, and we are helping your families. Only the country has borders, the nation does not – and no Hungarian is alone. Tens of thousands of soldiers are dying on the front lines. The number of widows, orphans and parents who have lost their children is already astronomically high. Although not ours, this war is tormenting our lives also. It is blocking the growth of the European and Hungarian economies, and 185 billion euros has been poured into this hopeless war. And now the Europeans want to pull out tens of billions more – including from our pockets. European money is pouring into Ukraine in untold amounts, and what we get in return is high energy prices, war inflation, national economies teetering on the brink of collapse, and the closure of once world-famous European factories. There will be no economic development in Europe as long as the war continues. It is a miracle that here we are able to run Europe’s largest home creation programme and Europe’s largest tax reduction revolution at the same time.

My Friends,

Brussels has run out of money. They have no money, but they want to wage war. This is why they want to raise taxes, why they want to tax pensions, and why they want to abolish the reductions in household energy bills. They want us to pay for the war. And this is why they want to push Ukraine into the European Union , whatever the cost. Bringing war to Europe and taking money to Ukraine. This is the age-old logic of colonialism: to divide up weakened countries. They talk about supporting Ukraine, but the division of Ukraine is already on the agenda. This is how it has been for centuries. The billions given to Ukraine are not money thrown away, but an investment; to them the war is not a horror, but an opportunity. Buying up and dividing up a country is cheapest in a war. Ukraine has long since ceased to be sovereign or independent – and it is certainly not self-governing. Its fate is now in the hands of others.

Fellow Celebrants,

The Ukrainians are treating the Hungarians badly. They are treating the people of Transcarpathia badly, and they are treating us badly too. Despite this, Hungary is helping to bring about peace – Christian morality and common sense demand this. We are the only country in Europe where a peace deal can be struck, where peace can be achieved – and we stand ready for that. We want Ukraine to have an association with the EU and enter into a strategic partnership with us. But we do not want to – and will not – belong in the same alliance system as Ukraine. They cannot be members of either our military or economic alliance. They would bring war, take out our money, and ruin our economy. Partnership yes, membership no. This is what the Hungarian nation wants.

Fellow Celebrants,

Today Hungary is the only country in Europe standing up for peace. There are those who want peace, but who do not dare to stand up for it, preferring to march alongside the war alliance. Let that be on their consciences! Perhaps they are not strong enough. But peace requires strength – and we have it. We did not always have it, however. Remember when the 2nd Ukrainian Front arrived [in 1944]: Hungary was occupied, weak and vulnerable. Today we are not under German occupation. Brussels has not yet been able to occupy Budapest. We are not now a people to be used as pawns by an empire, sent to the front lines as cannon fodder. We are masters of our own fate. Remember, we lost 660,000 lives in the First World War and 850,000 in the Second. That is one and a half million people! If they had not been lost and their children and grandchildren had been born, today we would not have to worry about population decline. This must never happen again! We were unable to stay out of the first and second great wars, but we shall stay out of this one.

Fellow Celebrants,

We are now a strong and sovereign nation of dignity, which will preserve itself and its future, no matter how much the traitors howl “Slava Ukraini!” Our only response to that is, “Dicsőség Magyarországnak!” [“Glory to Hungary!”] Those who say “no” to war are with us. Those who are Hungarian want peace. Those who are Hungarian want to live. We shall not give our money, we shall not hand over our weapons, we shall not go to war, and we shall not die for Ukraine – but we shall live for Hungary.

My Friends,

Five months from now our country must decide its own fate. Those of us who are here know what we can do, we know what we must do. And we will do what we must. We are ready. You can see that when we need to move, we move together. When what is needed is strategic calm, we wait for the right moment. And when the moment comes and we need to strike, we strike: with our ballpoint pens – just don’t tear the ballot paper. But over the next five months we also need to speak to those Hungarians who have been misled. We must not give up on a single soul, because every Hungarian is responsible for every Hungarian. I am not talking about their leaders. They have their masters. They know exactly what they are doing and why. But there are many Hungarians who believe that they are supporting a good cause when they support Brussels and the puppet government candidates sent here from Brussels. We must tell them this: today Brussels is not a help, but a danger. The European People’s Party is not our friend, but our adversary. Brussels and its Hungarian representatives are not bringing advancement to Hungary, but war. Those who believe they are supporting a change of government are in fact supporting war – whether they know it or not. They are not supporting a change of government, but instead the Brussels bureaucrats who want to force the Migration Pact on us and turn Hungary into an immigrant country. Those who want a change of government do not want a better life, but quite the opposite: they are supporting tax increases, taxes on pensions, the abolition of household energy price reductions and the curtailment of family support. And this is true even if they do not know it, do not believe it, or do not want to believe it. So we need to talk to them! And we need to talk to young people too. My friends, this is not an easy task. Perhaps we are not up to the task, but we still have to try.

Well, Young Hungarians,

Revolutions are usually started by young people. That was the case in 1956. And even earlier: Petőfi was 25; Rákóczi was 27. Young people are always at the forefront, raising the banner of freedom. The nation could always count on them when needed. But today, when you are needed again, can your country count on you? The world has changed. Reality has been replaced by online and virtual spaces. It is difficult to know what is manipulation and what is reality. Is there even such a thing as reality anymore? We believe that there are real things. Hungary, your homeland, is real. Freedom is real, too – the freedom your grandparents fought and died for. The attack is real, too: our peace, our freedom and our security are in danger. This is the real world. And it is also real that to defend Hungary everyone is needed – including you. Defending your homeland is a just cause. It is not manipulation, it is not fake, it is not a trick. If you want what you do to have weight and seriousness, stand up for the just cause and get started. Dare and take action. Take risks. Protect what is noblest. But you should know that the Brussels empire does not want you to be patriots: the Brussels empire wants you to be Europeans with no homeland; it wants you to remain in the virtual world; it wants you to slumber, hooked up to a machine. It is time to rise up.

Young Hungarians,

You too can be patriots. You can be free and proud Hungarians. But first you must unhook yourself from the machine and throw away the Brussels infusion tube. Wake up, rebel, your country awaits!

Dear Friends,

This is where we stand. Once again, we have two choices. In 1956 it was freedom or slavery. Today it is war or peace. There is nowhere to hide and nowhere to retreat. War would take away our future – this is how it is, whether you like it or not. Hungary stands in the way of the warmongers in Brussels. In 1956 they came with tanks; today they come with financial sanctions. Just as they found their padded-jacketed henchmen back then, today they have their slim-fit acolytes for the Brussels master plan. The good news is that we have a choice. The supporters of peace are gathering. After Italy and Slovakia, the tide has turned in the Czech Republic, it is turning in Poland, we have the President of the United States on our side, and the ground is shifting beneath the feet of the European liberal elite. And we are here too. In 1956 Budapest was the capital of European freedom; in 2025 Budapest will be the capital of European peace.

My Friends,

The cooperation of the European peoples was the greatest idea for centuries, and yet it has turned into oppression from Brussels. One cannot reach an agreement with them; they only recognise submission. Those who reach agreement with Brussels have submitted – they have submitted to migration, and they have submitted to plans for war. There is no middle way. Yes to the European Union, no to Brussels.

My Friends,

Next year we must show the world that there is a nation in the heart of Europe that is not afraid to go its own way. There is a nation that will not give in to blackmail. A nation that will not retreat in the storms of history. That nation is us, Hungarians, the wayfarers of freedom. And as long as we are here, in this square, and as long as there is even one Hungarian left on Earth, there will be someone who will say: “There will be peace here, because we want peace. And there will be freedom, because we were born to be free.”

God above us all, Hungary before all else! Go Hungary, go Hungarians!
