Role of Turkic countries in Hungary’s energy supply is key

The role of the Turkic countries in Hungary’s energy supply is key; if we want cheap energy, we need friends, not enemies, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated on his Facebook account on Wednesday.

In connection with the Budapest informal summit of the Organization of Turkic States, Mr Orbán recalled that the Ukrainians had shut down the pipeline system coming from Russia to Hungary which would have thrust Hungary into an impossible, even tragic situation, had we not entered into intensive cooperation with the Turkic states in the years before.

“You may perhaps remember, I’m sure President Erdogan does, the enormous debates we had here in the West about whether it was a good idea to build the TurkStream gas pipeline,” the Prime Minister stressed.

He observed that westerners had done everything they could to prevent it from being built, “but we persevered, and built it.”

“If this pipeline system did not exist today, then there would be no gas and there would be no energy in Hungary,” Mr Orbán stressed.
