The Prime Minister heard the report of water experts; according to this, a defence line of the length of 2,800 metres is necessary on Petőfi Island. A part of the defence line was not dismantled after the 2013 flood, and so now less than half of it had to be rebuilt. Thanks to the work of firefighters, municipal workers and many volunteers, the missing section had been built by Friday evening, and the entire flood protection facility has been sealed and reinforced with sand bags.
Sand bags necessary for further protection have been deposited at various points on the island, there is machinery and road equipment available on the island, and 130 firefighters are also standing by. An ongoing monitoring service is monitoring the defence lines around the clock. “We are ready for the defence effort of the next few hours,” Mr Orbán established during his onsite inspection.
The Prime Minister agreed with the new mayor that in the future mobile dams, rather than temporary dams will protect the city of Baja from floods.
