It will be difficult, but we will do it, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a video posted on his Facebook account on Sunday in connection with the resolution of the unfolding flood situation.
“Budapest, Római-part, where I’m standing now, will be impassable within a day. The expected enormous water mass coming this way will stand at head height by tomorrow, and two metres higher than that a day or two later. However, water experts are full of self-confidence and self-assured, they believe that not even the maximum water level will exceed the highest recorded to date,” Mr Orbán stated.
He added: as they said, given that they had been able to cope with the highest water level recorded to date, they would also be able to do so with a lower water level.
We have three critical sections: one is Szigetköz, the other one is the Danube Bend, while the third one is Budapest itself. We have already assigned technical liaison officers to posts, they’re already in their respective stations, they will be the ones who will help volunteers in order to avoid the development of chaotic situations and will ensure that all the good will with which people will assist in this flood defence emergency will add up to a reasonable effort,
he wrote.
The Prime Minister stressed that all necessary technical and financial resources were available.
“[Interior Minister] Sándor Pintér is in charge of disaster management, meaning that he is at the very top of the defence effort, and I’m sure that as in the case of every flood so far, also now he will supervise the job in hand well. And of course, the government is also behind him, as is the prime minister should the need arise. It will be difficult, but we will do it,” Mr Orbán said in conclusion.
