The Prime Minister talked to PragerU in Budapest. In the interview, he said that at present Hungary is living in especially dangerous time for two reasons.
He mentioned the war between Ukraine and Russia as one of the sources of danger, while he cited the aspirations of Brussels as the other, adding that 15 years ago this was not yet the case,
“Brussels wants to build a United States of Europe, a kind of empire.” Some countries like this aspiration, others do not, Hungary belongs to the camp of pro-sovereignty countries, and does not like to be told by the centralised Brussels bureaucracy how to live in Hungary. “We are sovereigntists and freedom fighters,” Mr Orbán laid down.
The Prime Minister said that the war is taking place not only between Ukraine and Russia as it is a ‘proxy war’ between Russia and the West; Hungary belongs to the West.
Mr Orbán stressed that he simultaneously maintained good relations with US President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. “I serve my country’s interests, and wouldn’t like to join any particular country group. I would like to maintain a sovereign scope for manoeuvre in foreign policy, and would like to maintain this country’s national sovereignty,” he pointed out.
Criticising the present state and aspirations of the European Union, the Prime Minister said the EU should serve the Member States because “the European Union is not about Brussels and not about the European institutions, but about sovereign Member States.”
Regarding the trade agreement recently concluded between the European Union and the United States, the Prime Minister said concerning the agreement on tariffs, the European Union found itself in a losing position, and he concluded that there was a “featherweight” negotiator on one side and a “heavyweight” one on the other, which left no doubt about the outcome.
At the same time, according to Mr Orbán, the other items of the European-US agreement raise even more serious concerns than the tariffs which are clearly disadvantageous for the European Union.
He pointed out that the President of the European Commission had had no authorisation to commit to energy procurements worth USD 750 billion and European investments worth USD 600 billion as the European Commission had neither financial resources for the purchase of US energy, nor money to invest in the United States.
Mr Orbán highlighted that the commitment related to weapons procurements included in a “secret” clause of the trade agreement posed the biggest threat. According to his information, this is about the United States selling weapons to Ukraine which the European Union will pay for.
The Prime Minister took the view that if the United States wanted to agree on energy, investments and weapons, they had better contact the Member States.
In the context of Hungarian border protection and Hungary’s migration policy, Mr Orbán said he is proud that not a single migrant is coming to Hungary, and that no one is allowed to enter the territory of the country without the permission of the authorities.
Regarding the disputes between the European Union and Hungary about migration, he said this issue is about who may decide on the composition of the country’s population. “No one else, but us, or else we’re not an independent country,” he said, addressing the central issue of the dispute.
Mr Orbán also rendered an account of the most important measures of Hungary’s family policy, mentioning support for mothers as its central element. He highlighted the system of tax benefits and the personal income tax exemption of mothers.
