Mr Orbán said based on the information available to them, a sabotage operation was being prepared on the Vojvodina section of the TurkStream gas pipeline that supplies Hungary.
The Prime Minister indicated that he had consulted with the President of Serbia, and informed members of the public that no one had been injured, and the pipeline was operating without disruption. He stressed: he thanked President Vucic for the work of the Serbian authorities. The Serbs have reinforced the protection of the gas pipeline, he said.
Mr Orbán drew attention to the fact that the operation of this pipeline was vital for Hungary, 60 per cent of Hungary’s gas consumption was supplied through it.
He announced that they had therefore ordered the increased military monitoring and protection of the Hungarian section of the pipeline.
The Serbian authorities are investigating, and the Hungarian authorities are in continuous contact with them, Mr Orbán highlighted.
The Prime Minister also said an unprecedented energy crisis is approaching Europe. European countries need and will increasingly need energy coming from Russia as well, he added.
He pointed out: Ukraine has been working for years to cut Europe off from Russian energy. They blew up Nord Stream, shut down the gas pipeline supplying Hungary, and this year, by closing the Friendship pipeline, placed Hungary under an oil blockade, while the Russian section of TurkStream is under continuous military attack.
Mr Orbán highlighted: Ukraine’s efforts pose a direct threat to Hungary. Hungary’s energy security is not a game. We will protect our energy system, the secure supply of families, and our national interests, the Prime Minister said.
