Facebook statement by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán

The images proving that our compatriot, József Sebestyén, was beaten to death during forced conscription by individuals referred to as “recruiters” have circulated across the entire Carpathian Basin and shocked people there. Nothing authorises any state to use the brutality with which Ukraine treated József Sebestyén. His fate clearly illustrates the conditions prevailing in Ukraine: state-controlled lawlessness and the complete lack of legal certainty. This case exposes the Brussels machinery’s hymns of praise for Zelensky and proves why Ukraine cannot be a member of the European Union. József Sebestyén was not only a Ukrainian citizen, but also a Hungarian citizen – and therefore a citizen of the European Union. Today the Hungarian government has initiated a motion in Brussels to immediately add the Ukrainian leaders responsible for the death of the Hungarian citizen József Sebestyén to the European Union’s human rights sanctions list. The EU has already applied this mechanism several times with regard to other countries. It is time for Brussels to stand up not only for the Ukrainian ruling administration, but also for the Ukrainian people and the Hungarians of Transcarpathia.
