It’s Wednesday morning in Nagymaros. Yesterday the highest flood wave entered Hungary, and it’s approaching us here in Nagymaros. Here the defences have been fully prepared. An exemplary solution has been chosen, because here the local population is defending itself. More than 400 volunteers have been organised to be immediately available when the water arrives. They’ve built this mobile flood barrier. This mobile barrier is one of the first such barriers in Hungary, built using the experience gained from previous floods. They handle it, they store it and they erect it whenever it’s needed. I think that Nagymaros is an example to us all in terms of cooperation among the population and citizens, with the water authority officials contributing well to the defence efforts. So we can say with certainty that there will be no problem in Nagymaros, the water won’t reach the top of the mobile barrier that’s already been built – but if necessary, they could raise it by another 80–90 centimetres. Nagymaros can do it!
