We must not allow a pro-Ukraine government to be formed in Hungary

Brussels, Kiev and the Tisza Party are colluding against the Hungarian people; we must not allow a pro-Ukraine government to be formed in Hungary, Prime Minister-President of Fidesz Viktor Orbán stated on Sunday at the election rally of the government parties in Hódmezővásárhely.

At the event held outside the Bessenyei Ferenc Culture Centre, Mr Orbán said in April we will elect a fate for ourselves. Brussels and Kiev are levelling demands in vain, we will not destroy Hungary for their sake, we cannot allow our money to be sent to Kiev and our sons to Ukraine, he stressed.

He pointed out: in Hungary, only Fidesz is able to ward off the threats facing us and to protect the country’s security. Let us renew our anti-war alliance in April because we can only keep Hungary out of the war with national unity, he said, adding that Fidesz is the safe choice.

The politician said they would like to reach everyone and to re-conclude with everyone the anti-war alliance they concluded in the 2022 elections. He said the Peace March has changed everything, it has been revealed that “we are more numerous, and we are the favourites.”

Regarding his experiences of his tour of the country, the Prime Minister concluded that the supporters of the Fidesz-Christian Democratic People’s Party alliance are in the majority.

He said the opponent, too, is touring the country, but their goal is different: “they are disparaging us, looking down on everyone and everything, picking a fight with everyone, they’re only talking about us.” “Meanwhile, we’re talking about the country and the Hungarian people,” he added.

Thanking the people for the support of the past four years, the Prime Minister recalled that in the previous elections, a month after the beginning of the Russo-Ukrainian war, he pledged “to keep Hungary out of the war come what may.” “I’d like to respectfully inform you that I have kept my promise,” he laid down.

Despite the fact that the past four years have passed in the shadow of the war, they have managed to preserve Hungary as Europe’s safest country. While in Western Europe factories are closing down, there is unemployment in the millions, “in Hungary we have preserved everyone’s jobs,” he stressed, adding that today in Hungary everyone who wants to work is able to do so.

He said in the shadow of the war, they restored the thirteenth monthly pension – which “the Left took away from pensioners” – and even began the introduction of the fourteenth monthly pension.

The government launched Europe’s most preferential housing system for young people in the form of a fixed 3 per cent credit programme. Today in Europe, young Hungarians have the easiest and cheapest access to housing, he pointed out.

The government has also honoured the pledges it made to families, the Prime Minister underlined.

“If there are no children, there is no future; if there are children, there is a future,” he said. This is why the government is introducing – as a unique measure in the world – the lifelong tax exemption of mothers with minimum two children, he laid down.

Addressing Hódmezővásárhely’s opposition mayor Péter Márki-Zay, the Prime Minister also drew attention to the fact that in the shadow of the war the government has doubled Hungary’s assets. The country had never before had such high foreign currency reserves, while its gold reserves have increased from just 3 tonnes in 2010 to 103 tonnes.

Mr Orbán said Hungary has fulfilled all its duties towards a country in trouble when it helped the refugees fleeing from Ukraine. “We don’t owe Ukraine anything,” and “we won’t support them by destroying ourselves in the process,” he laid down.

He stressed: we will not go to war in the interest of the Ukrainians because “this war is not ours.” We have a vested interest in staying out of it, preserving Hungary’s peace and security and “not allowing a situation to develop where all of a sudden our sons find themselves in the territory of Ukraine as soldiers,” he said.

The Prime Minister laid down: the Ukrainians are levelling demands at us in vain, they cannot want our money either. Brussels or Kiev put us under pressure in vain, we have always stood up for the Hungarian people, and we will not allow the Hungarians’ money, the fruit of the Hungarians’ hard work to be taken away in the future either, he stressed.

In his view, if Ukraine joins the European Union, “the very next day, we’re in the war with the Russians,” and therefore, we must conclude a contract with the Ukrainians, but must never admit them to the EU as members where, due to their size, their voting right would significantly exceed that of Hungary.

Mr Orbán also spoke about the fact that our children’s and grandchildren’s money, too, is in danger because in Western Europe, there is no money for the war, and so EU Member States are taking out loans from banks. Most recently, he managed to keep Hungary out of such a loan, he added.

He said the money is being sent to Ukraine as a loan, and the Ukrainians will only repay this if the Russian pay them reparations. This means that that money will never be recovered, he pointed out, adding that this would mean debt slavery, and “we will not become debt slaves for the Ukrainians’ sake.”

The Prime Minister said the Ukrainians are capable of anything, they blew up the Nord Stream pipeline and imposed a gas blockade on Hungary, but we warded off that gas blockade. Today, a Hungarian family pays HUF 250,000 a year on average for household energy; families in Poland pay HUF 900,000, while families in the Czech Republic pay as much as a million forints. If we are unable to import cheap Russian energy, then similar to other countries in the region, we will pay an extra monthly salary for household energy, he pointed out.

He stressed: the Druzhba crude oil pipeline has been attacked 23 times so far; the Ukrainians had managed to restore operations 22 times before, while now, a month before the Hungarian elections, they did not. “Zelenskyy and his people invented the oil blockade against Hungary in order to help Tisza and to cause economic chaos,” he stated.

“Brussels, the Tisza Party and Ukraine are colluding against the Hungarian people. Therefore, we must not allow a pro-Ukraine government to be formed in Hungary,” he laid down in summary.

Mr Orbán said storm clouds will continue gathering in the next four years as well: the Russo-Ukrainian war is still under way, the oil blockade which we must break is also still under way, a war has broken out in the Middle East, in the world economy we are facing the threat of an energy crisis, and another major migration crisis is likewise on the horizon. He recalled that Iran was a country of ninety million where there were four million refugees from Afghanistan which was also at war.

He added “this is not like a Bud Spencer film where they come at you one by one and we will then smack them one by one,” all the troubles will come at us at once during the period ahead, and it will take experience, cold blood, a clear head and a firm hand to avert them.

He understands, he said in continuation, that Tisza’s politicians would like some title and office, that they would like to get into power, and he also understands if a young man wants to become prime minister. None of this is forbidden, he observed, adding that the only question is when the right time for this is.

The Prime Minister said “at this point in time in Hungary, only the Fidesz-Christian Democratic People’s Party alliance is able to give our country the experience, knowledge and safety this takes.”

He said “I’m saying with due modesty that other than myself […] I can’t see anyone else who would be able to protect Hungary from the dangers that are now threatening us.”

Mr Orbán stated that he was ready to fight this election battle, “I have plenty of bullets in the magazine.” In continuation, he said he is ready to fight a battle for peace after the elections, to renew the alliance for peace and to keep Hungary out of the war.

He also stressed that he was ready to restore national unity after the elections in order for Hungary to avert the troubles it is facing and to achieve its overarching national goals.

The Prime Minister recalled: since the beginning of democracy in 1990, the people of Hódmezővásárhely have always sent civic, patriotic and Christian deputies to the Hungarian Parliament. He asked people living in the region to vote on 12 April for Gábor Czirbus who is the representative of the civic, patriotic and conservative forces.

He said thank you to members of his community “for also acquainting Tisza supporters with the actual state of affairs,” and for supporting him “against those shouting at the back.” It is very important to learn one’s lesson, he stressed.
