Facebook statement by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán

Here at the prime ministers’ summit in Brussels we’ve been wrestling with each other for almost eight hours. We’re having a big debate on Ukraine’s membership of the European Union. Hungary’s position is clear: Ukraine isn’t ready to start negotiations with us on EU membership. Under these circumstances it’s a completely senseless, irrational and wrong decision to open negotiations with Ukraine, and Hungary won’t change its position. By contrast, the twenty-six other countries have insisted that this decision be taken. Hungary has therefore decided that if the twenty-six other countries decide in this manner, then they should go their own way; Hungary doesn’t want to share in this bad decision, and this is why Hungary has distanced itself from the decision today. The negotiations will continue with the amendment of the budget.
