We must grab the chance of peace now, and for this we need both the prayers of the Holy Father and the invaluable diplomatic experience of the Vatican, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stressed in a video posted on Facebook after he was received by Pope Francis at an audience in the Vatican on Wednesday.

“I came to the Holy Father because we must grab the chance of peace now,” Mr Orbán said in the video, adding that for this they will equally need the Holy Father’s prayers and the Vatican’s invaluable diplomatic experience.

He stressed that since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, two entities had believed in peace: the Vatican and Hungary. Peace is now within palpable reach, he added.

He highlighted that while the world was preparing for Christmas, a number of European leaders were arguing for the continuation of the war and the enhancement of its intensity. The Hungarian Prime Minister described this as a dangerous development, warning that we are facing dangerous weeks when the war could escalate.

“Together we must hold back leaders of the world from making irreversible decisions; we need a ceasefire within the shortest possible time so that we may grab the chance of peace,” he stated.
