Facebook statement by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán

We’ve arrived. The EU summit of prime ministers is about to begin. The most important item on the agenda is Ukraine’s accession to the EU. They want to push us into starting negotiations with Ukraine as soon as possible and to get it into the European Union as soon as possible. We believe that Ukraine’s accession would have disastrous consequences for Hungary, but also for the European Union as a whole. Obviously it would ruin European farmers, it would ruin the European Union’s budget, and it would bring corruption and the permanent threat of war into Europe. Preparation has been insufficient, and the decision is unprepared.  From Hungary we can clearly see that under the current conditions and in the current situation, Ukraine’s rapid accession to the EU is not timely, and therefore should not be supported.
