Facebook statement by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán

This is Beijing. The third major conference entitled “Belt and Road” is being held here, with representatives from 130 countries – including twenty heads of state and government. After 2017 and 2019, Hungary has been invited again; and we were delighted to accept, because China is an important economic partner. For example, this year Chinese companies were the biggest foreign investors in Hungary. Today we started our talks with the Prime Minister of China, signed ten agreements of an economic nature, and then continued with the heads of the two largest Chinese banks. The world has come to a crossroads. The big question is this: war or peace, confinement or cooperation? We Hungarians are well acquainted with confinement, and we know what it entails: impoverishment and the constant threat of war. By contrast, we’re working to expand our economic relations, both to the East and to the West. I’m convinced that this is the only way to preserve Hungary’s competitiveness and security. This is why we’re here in China, and this is what we’ll be discussing in the coming days.
