The Prime Minister pointed out that they wanted a change of government not only in Hungary, but everywhere, including in Poland, for instance, where there were patriotic governments standing against the liberal Brussels’ bureaucratic centralisation attempts. It is always these governments they tried to topple, “including us, including me,” he said. He highlighted that he was able to tell precisely how, when and with what methods they had tried to achieve this in every election.
“We have always managed to ward these attempts off,” he stated, underlining that what they are observing at present is a continuation of these attempts.
The actors keep changing; first they wanted to smuggle Gordon Bajnai back, before him “we had here” Ferenc Gyurcsány. Next they figured that Gyurcsány’s wife would be the right choice and then the Brussels bureaucracy supported her with all its might, while now they are trying to promote the Tisza Party and Péter Magyar. This is clear to everyone, he laid down.
“The content doesn’t change; in fact, it has become ever more shameless,” he said.
He recalled that when he was in the European Parliament in order to present the programme of the Hungarian EU presidency, Ursula von der Leyen and Manfred Weber – proceeding in the capacity of godparents of some kind – introduced Péter Magyar as the head of the prospective Hungarian government supported by Brussels.
“They even said it, I’m out, he’s in,” he indicated.
He also said that the aggressive hectoring that can be observed today, mostly outside Parliament, is not unprecedented, except while in the past this was not the general tone, it has now become the voice of opposition politics. They have to be able to respond to the challenges received in any form of weaponry: when in the style of Mother Teresa, they must respond in that style; when in the style of an aggressive loudmouth, in that style. “We have a person for everything, and so we handled this situation, too,” he said.
He also said today they are observing two processes that must be separated from one another; one of them is “a global systems change,” while the other one is a change within the western world. The East is gaining in strength, while the West is weakening in relative terms, he pointed out. Regarding the second process, it is about the fact that since the end of the Cold War, we have observed a fight between two political and intellectual programmes or trends: the progressive liberal trend and the programme of the patriots. What is happening now is that the liberals are losing and the patriots are winning. The biggest victory has been scored by US President Donald Trump which simultaneously gives the western world a chance to gain in strength again and to define its place in “the global systems change.” According to Mr Orbán, the liberals’ last bridgehead, refuge or citadel where they have been compelled to retreat to is Brussels.
“This is Mordor, this is where the Dark Lord settled,” he said, adding that now there are liberals only there.
Since the patriots formed their group, wherever there have been elections in Europe, they have won everywhere. Sooner or later, the Europeans will have to carry out a patriotic political shift, he underlined.
He also said with the victory of the Republicans in the United States, in the western world pro-migration politics is dead and buried, gender politics is dead and buried, and he sincerely hopes that the days of pro-war politics, too, are numbered. In the European Parliament, as a result of the latest elections, a pro-change majority came into being; according to their calculations, in 17 of the 27 Member States political forces which wanted change won.
In Mr Orbán’s view, they will most certainly be able to profit in three ways from Donald Trump’s victory. These are issues of an economic nature, and it will be revealed later whether the Hungarians hit the jackpot; “at this point in time, we got four numbers out of five right in the lottery.” He said while the Democrat administration was not prepared to conclude an agreement with Hungary on the avoidance of double taxation as a renewal of the agreement in effect previously, a new agreement will now be concluded. Secondly, the Hungarians were punished in the US’s visa policy for political and ideological reasons; this, too, will come to an end. Thirdly, US investors will come to Hungary, and he is working to ensure that these will be investors in the future’s modern technologies, bringing new technologies, jobs and capital to Hungary. In his opinion, the beneficial impact of the Republican victory on the transformation of the entire world will not materialise in the first few months, but will be perceivable within a year or two, “the world will become more normal.”
He further said the West – America and Europe combined – has spent an amount in the magnitude of USD 310 billion on the war so far; this is one and a half times the Hungarian GDP. He pointed out that the Americans would no longer foot their part of the bill in the future, and the Europeans would not be able to cope on their own. If there is no money, there is no war. If there is no war, we need peace negotiations, while the first step is a ceasefire. This is what he is waiting for, and he believes that this will happen, he underlined.
Mr Orbán also spoke about the fact that the performance of the Hungarian economy will not change for the better because the performance of Europe will improve. It will change for the better even if the performance of Europe does not improve because there are two well-thought-out, hidden financial resources which they can now resort to: in 2025, the interest service payable on loans taken out previously will decrease significantly. While in 2024 they paid 4 to 4.5 per cent of the gross domestic product as interest on loans taken out previously, this will decrease to 3.5 per cent, meaning that there will be that much more scope for financial manoeuvre. On the other hand, they launched enormous projects, industrial projects which had recently been vehemently attacked by the opposition.
He pointed out that there was no such thing as surrendering a little bit of sovereignty. Hungary is an independent, sovereign community and state of 1,100 years which is capable of leading an independent life. We will not surrender any of it. They must win the 2026 election, but the government’s success will not on its own bring about an election success; hundreds of thousands of people with a national, Christian and civic mindset will have to work hard for it, but the same as in the past, their political community will succeed in 2026 as well.
