Brussels’ budget proposal is nothing short of frivolous, unfit for debate

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had talks with President of the European Council Charles Michel together with the Croatian, Belgian, Luxembourg, Slovak and Swedish prime ministers. At the talks, Mr Orbán rejected migration and the EU’s budget proposal which also seeks to increase the size of the Brussels bureaucracy, Bertalan Havasi, the Prime Minister’s press chief informed the Hungarian news agency MTI.

Mr Orbán said, in its present form, the European Commission’s proposal for the amendment of the EU budget is nothing short of frivolous and is unfit for further debate.

According to the communique issued after the video conference, Brussels would provide Ukraine with grants worth EUR 50 billion in total, notwithstanding the fact that the utilisation of the EU funds made available to Ukraine since the beginning of the war remains unclear for the time being. Brussels is demanding more money from the Member States in order to cover the deficit developing in the EU budget due to rising interest rates, whilst continuing to retain the funds due to Hungary and Poland from the credit facility jointly taken out by the Member States earlier.

Another problem is that the Commission’s budget proposal would seek to further increase the Brussels bureaucracy.

According to the position of the Hungarian government, instead of stopping illegal immigration, Brussels wants to spend further billions on supporting the influx of illegal migrants into Europe. Mr Orbán reiterated: the solution to the problem is that if someone submits an application for entry into the territory of the European Union, they must remain outside the European borders until the assessment of their application.
